WORKFORCE: Get moving on a powerful career

Manitoba’s construction activity and employment opportunities have been raised to record levels, and growth is expected to continue through 2017.
The province will need over 5,000 construction workers to replace those who are expected to retire, plus an additional 5,400 new workers to accommodate the expected rise in construction activity.
Educational opportunities are vast in Manitoba, ranging from certified skilled labourer courses to a degree in construction management. New in 2010, the MHCA was instrumental in the development of the Construction Management Degree Program (CMDP) at Red River College. The MHCA raised $60,000 towards an endowment fund, which was matched by the province for a total of $120,000.
WORKFORCE, delivered by the Manitoba Heavy Construction Association, was developed by industry for industry. We train new entrants with interest in heavy construction and provide upgraded accreditation for experienced heavy construction personnel. Incorporated in 2001, our curriculum and delivery is accredited by the Manitoba government.
Students can choose from the following:
Skilled Labourer, which provides entry-level education for the heavy construction industry. Individuals will be given classroom instruction and hands-on training.
Heavy Equipment Operator, which provides classroom and hands-on training relating to a variety of heavy equipment pieces.
Upon graduation, students will receive certification as a skilled labourer or in the operation of heavy equipment, based on provincial occupational standards.
New materials, technologies and learning techniques are continually integrated into the program. Qualified training instructors have vast industry experience and fully involve each student in learning through a combination of classroom and hands-on training components on most training topics.
WORKFORCE can provide tailored training for groups. Contact Greg Huff, the WORKFORCE program manager, at 947-1379 for more information.
