The MHCA is sending letters of congratulations and welcome to Premier-designated Wab Kinew and his NDP caucus, which won a convincing majority of seats October 3.
“We are looking forward to working with the new government, having had numerous encouraging conversations pre-election with Mr. Kinew and key members of his team and caucus,” MHCA President & CEO Chris Lorenc said.
“We also want to thank Heather Stefanson, who is stepping down as PC leader, and to Dougald Lamont, who similarly announced he would leave the Liberal party helm,” Lorenc noted. “A public life is a tough calling and Manitobans are indebted to each for their service.”
Stefanson worked diligently to advance trade transportation infrastructure investment provincially and at the national level, work that will serve as a foundation for progress, he said.
The MHCA will ask for introductory meetings with Kinew and the new Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation, who has yet to be named. Kinew has announced his executive office team, with Mark Rosner as Chief of Staff but no date as yet for when the legislative session will begin.
While health and education occupied the top issues for the NDP, the party and leader expressed the plans and priorities on infrastructure and trade.
In addition to committing to building on the $500-million annual highways capital program, the party stressed the importance of transportation infrastructure, especially trade corridors, to a strong economy.
“We have maintained a strong relationship with the senior administration at MTI and we have every reason to expect that will continue because the link between strategic investment in infrastructure and economic growth is well-established and understood,” Lorenc said.
