Aggregate producers and road-building contractors, represented in joint MHCA committee meetings, will present their concerns to the City of Winnipeg arising out of trial runs this summer on two street projects where new base and sub-base specifications were in use.
“We do have some issues arising out of the summer experience with the sampling of materials, but we think there are reasonable fixes that work both for industry and the City and ensure the base laid down for roads is sound,” MHCA President Chris Lorenc said.
The MHCA has been speaking with Public Works officials and another meeting is planned later this month. The industry prefers sampling of aggregates at the pit with audits providing GPS-verified location of where samples are taken, and timely return of results to prevent significant disruption to the construction process and schedule.
“We would like to establish a process for ongoing consultation between industry and the City where proposed spec changes can be discussed well in advance of the changes,” Lorenc added.
The MHCA will updates members as the discussions proceed.
