Attracts over 750 Delegates in First Annual Event
The MHCA successfully hosted the first annual Heavy Construction EXPO MARCH 20-22, 2012 at the Winnipeg Convention Centre.
EXPO was a first of its kind for Manitoba and Canada – blending vocational, educational, and safety training to address the labour shortage and skill level challenges in the heavy construction industry.
With great turnout and corporate sponsorship, MHCA President Chris Lorenc was pleased in the first of what will be an annual event.
“We were delighted that over 750 individuals participated in our first EXPO,” he said.
“The registration response demonstrates the need for this type of specialized training. Its ultimate goal is a highly trained, skilled and safety conscious workforce in the heavy construction industry.”
EXPO offered accredited/certificate based education and training in three main course streams to increase the skills and knowledge in the heavy construction industry:
- Workforce Development
- Leadership and Professional Development
- COR™/SECOR™ Safety Training
EXPO featured several keynote speaker presentations, including:
- “Aboriginal Partnering” by Grand Chief Derek Nepinak of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs
- “Safety is a Team Game” by former NHL player Ryan Walter
- “SAFEWORK Needs Your Voice” by Winston Maharaj, CEO of the Workers Compensation Board of Manitoba
- “Four Generations, One Workplace” by Wade Miller, President and CEO of Pinnacle
The goal of EXPO is to partner with vocational training providers, Government, the Aboriginal Community, and other stakeholders in support of its objectives. We look forward to continuing this momentum into EXPO 2013.
We are already planning and looking forward to the 2013 EXPO, and aim to improve the overall experience for delegates, sponsors and exhibitors. Watch the Heavy News Weekly this fall for details on EXPO 2013!
