Manitoba launches review of Workplace Safety and Health Act and regulations

The provincial government has launched its review of the Workplace Safety and Health Act, and its three associated regulations, and is accepting submissions over the next three months, starting August 30. The review takes place every five years.

“We welcome the review because our industry supports modern, effective legislation to ensure workplaces are safe, healthy and meeting the needs of both employers and employees,” MHCA President Chris Lorenc said.

Don Hurst, Director of MHCA WORKSAFELY® Education and Training, has been appointed to the review committee. The committee is chaired by Dennis Nikkel, an occupational health consultant and a former director of the Occupational Health Branch with the WSH division of Manitoba Labour.

The committee includes labour, employer and technical representatives and will the review will focus on strong protections that meet the needs of modern workplaces, improving consistency with other jurisdictions, and ensuring requirements are clear and reasonable.

Recommendations are expected back to Reg Helwer, Minister of Labour, Consumer Protection and Government Services in the spring of 2023.
