Collaboration with unions, trades organizations key to success for MCSC summer camps

Construction projects require teamwork from many different people with many different skills. The same is true of building up the construction industry. MCSC Summer Camps 2024 UPDATE

MCSC’s summer camp wrapped up this month giving 32 students from Freedom International School in Winnipeg the opportunity to try all kinds of experiences trying out tools and techniques including: construction safety, understanding AC and DC circuitry, creating direct current projects, wiring an AC switch with light, working with electrical hand tools, crimping, working and gluing PVC and, learning all about the skills within the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) electrical union and piping industry at the Piping Industry Technical College, facilitated by IBEW Local 2085 and  PITC Local 254 (see story above for more).

Seven Oaks School Division reopened up summer camps at Garden City Collegiate in Winnipeg, reaching out to MCSC. Working closely with MCSC, instructor Brent Sharp led Seven Oaks School Division youth to experience a woodworking and metals summer camp workshop. Camp was from July 15th – 19th with 20 youths registered. Students built a handy wood toolbox using woodworking machines and equipment. Machines and equipment in the woodworking shop included mitre saws, planers, chop saws, table saws, sanders, band saws, drills. On the metals side, students were able to use the welder to fabricate their names on a metal nameplate. Custom interior compartments and trays for their wooden toolboxes were made of sheet metal and iron. Machines and equipment used in the metals workshop include mig welder, spot welder, drill press, angle grinders, brake press, shears… Safe workers of tomorrow also presented to youth.

English for Construction Purposes marks its fourth cohort – see the progress

For any construction company, communication is a key component of managing and completing any project successfully, especially when it comes to understanding the basics of the English Language— the prominent language used in the construction industry in Manitoba. That’s why MCSC created English for Construction Purposes (EFCP) course in 2023, along with other stakeholders including Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology, Winnipeg Construction Association, Manitoba Heavy Construction Association, Seven Oaks School Division, Manitoba Start and the Immigrant Centre.

Now into its fourth cohort of students, MCSC is working towards another round of EFCP training this coming early 2025. Some of the key take-aways included: Improve communication skills with workers on the job site, explore WHMIS symbols and their meaning, gain new knowledge regarding construction safety in Manitoba, become more familiar with construction signs and symbols, gain an understanding of action verb phrases, identify the main characteristics of commercial, residential, and road construction in Manitoba, and more!
