Premier Wab Kinew has set out the goals for newly appointed MTI Minister Lisa Naylor in delivering on key election promises, which includes a focus on growing the economy.
Specific to the department’s key priorities, Naylor’s ministerial mandate letter noted “it is your goal to deliver on the projects we have committed to and maintain capital investment in accordance with our commitment to deliver a balanced budget in the first term.”
The list for Naylor includes:
- Build the infrastructure we need to grow our economy
- Establish a blue-ribbon panel of local leaders and municipal officials to advise the government on infrastructure priorities
- Reverse the cuts to roads and maintenance and invest in snow clearing, gravel roads, ditches, bridges and culverts to keep families safe, protect communities from flooding and create good Manitoba jobs
- Work with other levels of government to get the upgrades to the North End Water Pollution Control Centre done with good Manitoba jobs created along the way
- Work with the department of Economic Development, Investment, Trade and Natural Resources to pursue initiatives to develop Churchill and CentrePort as transportation and supply chain hubs
MHCA President & CEO Chris Lorenc said he is strongly encouraged by the focus the new government has placed on growing the economy. Kinew, he noted, publicly acknowledged the role trade gateways and corridors, and a well-maintained transportation network, play in supporting trade and, thereby economic growth.
“Premier Kinew, during the election campaign, committed to the widening of Kenaston Boulevard and completing the Chief Peguis Trail and supported the full buildout of CentrePort Canada,” Lorenc said. “That was a clear sign he understands the critical link between efficient, seamless trade transportation networks and economic growth.”
