The need to increase maintenance work on Manitoba’s highways and invest in highways to enable economic activity are key goals of the provincial budget for 2024 and beyond, MTI Minister Lisa Naylor told more than 200 guests and industry members at the 3rd annual MHCA Chair’s Reception April 3.
The event, held at the RBC Convention Centre York Room, drew a strong turnout from political and senior government administration at the provincial and municipal levels.
Premier Wab Kinew was in attendance, as were key cabinet members such as Finance Minister Adrien Sala.
Winnipeg Mayor Scott Gillingham told the crowd that over the next six years there will be more than $1 billion invested in road works in the city, which is celebrating its 150th anniversary. He noted infrastructure investment was key to the city’s growth over the last 150 years, and will be just as important to economic development in the next 150 years.
“Your members are literally building our city,” Gillingham said.
Chair Dennis Cruise thanked the industry members and sponsors for supporting the event.
Cruise also noted the new provincial government has been very open and welcoming, engaging with MHCA on industry concerns, especially as they relate to the rollout of the tenders and the need to invest in trade corridors to elevate Manitoba’s trade profile and economic growth.
