The classifications of tractor and special mobile machines in the Highway Traffic Act have been eliminated, under amendments that took effect March 1.

The Highway Traffic Act now classifies tractors and special mobile machines as ‘infrastructure equipment.’

“Provided equipment meets the criteria for the new classification, it may travel on roads, without being registered,” Infrastructure Minister Ron Schuler said in a letter sent to the MHCA.

As well, the Highway Traffic Act now requires operators “to hold a minimum of $1,000,000 in third party liability insurance. The changes clarify the law for industry and serve the public interest by helping to ensure operators are adequately insured.”
