If negotiations fail to resolve the labour dispute between Air Canada and its pilots, Ottawa must send the matter to binding arbitration, more than 100 industry and business groups said in a letter to federal Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon this week.
The letter https://chamber.ca/publications/letter-to-minister-steven-mackinnon-regarding-potential-air-canada-labour-disruption/ , sent September 11, notes that a lock out or a strike that grounds Air Canada planes would be injurious to the economy, especially coming hard on the heels of a recent CN and CPKC rail shut down.
The letter notes that “the impact of a strike would extend far beyond passenger travel for both urban and rural Canadians — it would significantly disrupt Canada’s supply chain. Air Canada’s cargo network is important for the import and export of critical, time-sensitive goods such as vaccines and medical supplies, agriculture and perishable food products, and parts and machinery for small and medium sized Canadian manufacturers.”
The MHCA and the Western Canada Roadbuilders & Heavy Construction Association were signatories to the letter.
