The City of Winnipeg’s new Social Procurement Action Plan was unanimously passed July 13 by Council’s Executive Policy Committee.
The MHCA signed with the Winnipeg Construction Association a letter endorsing the plan, which lays the path to refinement of policies and protocols for using Winnipeg’s procurement program to create jobs and business opportunities for Indigenous peoples, newcomers, BIPOC and others within defined ‘equity’ groups.
“We felt that, through the engagement of the third-party consultant Buy Social Canada, the construction industry’s history of recruiting, training and employing individuals in the same equity groups and its concerns for preserving the open, transparent and fair tendering process have been recognized and respected,” MHCA President Chris Lorenc said.
The MHCA and the WCA worked with social enterprise organizations to advance the action plan that gives life to the City’s social procurement policy. The action plan now goes to City Council July 21 for final approval.
