WORKFORCE

The heavy construction industry has always been the landing space for those who are looking to break into or to start their careers again. MHCA’s WorkForce Development Committee has a renewed strategy for assisting our members in recruitment and retention.

FIND JOBS
A woman wearing a hard hat and safety vest stands confidently, holding a pole in a construction environment.

The heavy construction industry, like many across the country, is challenged to recruit and retain entry and skilled workers to meet the demands today and into the future.

MESSAGE FROM THE
CHAIR OF WORKFORCE

The MHCA has re-invigorated its WorkForce Development Committee to help ensure our industry has the resources to build their businesses and continue contributing to Manitoba’s economic growth.

Our Committee priorities are set out in a new short- and long-term strategy. The immediate needs have been identified as:

  1. Getting the word out to the public about the good jobs, good pay and opportunities for lasting careers in heavy construction. With innovations and modern equipment, as well as the unique tasks required of our industry, heavy construction workers can move up quickly into highly skilled and specialized work. The hourly wages on offer are impressive. We need to do more to tell people, including those just leaving high school, about these opportunities.
  2. We must be methodical and smart about engaging new or training existing workers. The industry’s broad strands of positions have not been well defined, including in the training and skill acquisition for some of the very specialized work we undertake. Heavy construction to date has not relied upon certifications and trades; we think that can change to better reflect the expertise required for the unique work we do. The industry needs to offer courses, training and skill certifications that clearly illustrate the long, rewarding careers on offer.

HEAVY CONSTRUCTION 101

The heavy construction industry builds the foundation of our communities, province and country. It constructs the essential infrastructure upon which our economy is built, protects our quality of life and moves people and products to their destinations daily.

CAREER EXPLORATION

The work of the heavy construction industry starts with shovels in the ground, and that can’t happen without the highly skilled and dedicated people in our industry.
