STAYING IN TOUCH: JACQUELYN ODURO
As Manitobans hit the roads and highways to celebrate the Canada Day long weekend, safety should be top of mind. Increased traffic, longer travel times, roadside activities and road construction all contribute to a higher risk of collisions and incidents.
Whether you’re headed to the lake, a backyard BBQ or a fireworks display, here are helpful tips to help you arrive alive:
- Drive sober and alert -Alcohol and cannabis impair your judgment, reaction time and coordination. Manitoba RCMP and police agencies increase check stops on long weekends—don’t risk a DUI. Plan a safe ride home.
- Avoid fatigue -rest before long drives and take breaks every few hours. A tired driver can be just as dangerous as an impaired one.
- Slow down and stay alert -Speeding is one of the leading causes of serious injuries and fatalities on rural highways. Keep your speed down, especially in construction zones and near roadside workers. Watch out for wildlife, especially at dawn and dusk.
- Buckle up -It’s simple but lifesaving. Make sure everyone in the vehicle wears a seatbelt, including back seat passengers. Child seats should be properly installed and age appropriate.
- Plan for conditions –Be sure to check road conditions and highway closures at www.manitoba511.ca. This will help minimize surprises.
- Put away your phone and devices – Distracted driving is a growing concern. Texts, calls, and social media can wait. Ensure your portable devices are put away while driving.
Let’s make this Canada Day one to remember for the right reasons. Drive safe. Arrive safe. Celebrate responsibly. Happy Canada Day everyone!
