This next week marks National Fire Prevention Week in Canada, from October 5-11. Fires are an ever-present threat in our workplaces and should be well planned for. The workplace safety and health act states that fire extinguishers must be inspected monthly by the workplace and annually by a third party.
Some tips to think about when inspecting your fire extinguishers include:
- Ensure the extinguisher is visible, unobstructed, and in an appropriate location.
- Verify the locking pin is intact and not rusted. Examine the extinguisher for obvious physical damage, corrosion, leakage, or clogged/cracked nozzle.
- Check that the pressure gauge or indicator is in the operable range or position and lift the extinguisher to ensure it is still full.
- Tip the extinguisher and tap the bottom with the base of your hand or a rubber mallet to ensure the chemical does not compact.
- Make sure the operating instructions on the nameplate are legible and facing outward.
- Check the last professional service date on the tag so that it is not past its annual inspection date.
- Initial and date the tag upon completion of monthly inspection.
