Chainsaws are a common tool on construction sites, particularly in winter for cleaning downed or damage trees after storms or heavy snow fall. Chainsaws are powerful portable tools, and one mistake can lead to serious injuries. Most accidents happen because of kickback, poor footing, or improper PPE. It is imperative to keep safety in mind while operating a chainsaw.
When doing so, use the following tips:
- Ensure only trained and authorized workers operate a chainsaw
- Inspect the chainsaw prior to use, including that the chain is sharp and tense, the chain brake is working, and guards are in place
- Ensure workers are wearing all applicable PPE, like hard hats, eye and face protection, hearing protection, cut-resistant gloves, chainsaw chaps or cut-resistant pants, and safety footwear
- Be sure to maintain a firm, two-handed grip of the chainsaw at all times
- Keep proper footing and balance while chain sawing. Never overreach
- Be aware of kickbacks as a hazard; avoid using the tip of the bar
- Shut off the chainsaw or engage the chain brake when moving between cuts
- Keep coworkers at a safe distance away while cutting
- Watch for debris, uneven ground, and overhead hazards
Overall, if something doesn’t feel safe, stop and reassess. Take your time and remember no cut is worth an injury.
