Cold weather safety and cold stress

STAYING IN TOUCH: JACQUELYN ODURO

A recent cold snap has come over Manitoba, and with that, brings many hazards. Cold weather is a regular part of construction work in Manitoba and brings added hazards to the jobsite. Cold stress is a serious risk and can include frostbite and hypothermia.

Watch for signs like shivering, numbness, confusion, or pale skin. Report symptoms immediately and get to a warm area.

Slips and falls are more common in winter due to ice, snow, and frozen ground. Keep walkways, ladders, and equipment access points clear and use sand or ice control as needed. Wear proper winter footwear with good traction like insulated boots and ice cleats.

Cold temperatures can affect equipment performance as well. Allow machines time to warm up and complete pre-use inspections. Use gloves that keep hands warm while still allowing safe control of tools.

When thinking of daily work, don’t forget to dress in layers, stay dry, take warm-up breaks, and drink warm fluids.

Cold weather is unavoidable, but injuries can be prevented by staying alert and working safely.
