STAYING IN TOUCH: JACQUELYN ODURO
With November comes the cold temperatures we are all familiar with this time of year. It’s a good idea to speak with workers regarding the upcoming weather as it is likely here to stay! Consider some of the challenges cold weather can bring to your workforce, along with solutions to those common issues.
Some of the challenges of cold weather are:
- Cold stress: Prolonged exposure can lead to frostbite or hypothermia.
- Slips and falls: Ice, snow, and frozen ground increase the risk.
- Reduced dexterity: Cold hands make it harder to grip tools or operate machinery safely.
- Carbon monoxide: Enclosed areas with heaters can build up dangerous gases.
Solutions include:
- Dress in layers: Wear moisture-wicking base layers, insulating middle layers, and a waterproof outer layer.
- Cover extremities: Warm gloves, hats, and insulated boots are essential.
- Stay dry: Wet clothing greatly increases heat loss.
- Take warm-up breaks: Use heated shelters or vehicles when available.
- Drink fluids: Dehydration happens even in cold weather and hydration is key.
- Watch out for each other: Look for signs of shivering, confusion, or pale, numb skin.
Should anyone become too cold it can lead to:
- Frostbite: Move the person to a warm area, remove wet clothing, and warm the area gently and gradually.
- Hypothermia: Get the person to a warm area, remove wet clothes, wrap in blankets, and call for medical help immediately.
Staying warm and alert keeps you safe and productive. Cold weather doesn’t have to slow us down we just have to work smarter.
