STAYING IN TOUCH: JACQUELYN ODURO
With the cooler weather and winter coming soon we are seeing an increase in traffic on our roads. While the snow is not here yet it is a good idea to take into consideration safe driving techniques to prepare for the upcoming season.
Hazards that may occur on the roads include:
- Drivers drifting into another lane because they are not paying attention or they are multi-tasking. This may include talking on the phone, texting, eating, etc.
- Drivers who follow too closely, make sudden turns without signaling, or weave in and out of traffic.
- The length, width, and weight of large trucks can create hazards for drivers of both small and large vehicles.
Some tips to consider for safe driving include:
- Assess stopping distances: Heavier vehicles, like trucks, need a much longer braking distance than smaller cars. Give yourself and other motorists appropriate space.
- Drive defensively: Do not assume another driver is going to move out of the way or allow you to merge. Be considerate of others, but look out for yourself.
- Be aware of your surroundings: Check your mirrors frequently and anticipate conditions before you act. Keep an eye on pedestrians, bicyclists, and pets along the road.
- Monitor your speed down: Posted speed limits are meant for ideal driving conditions. It is your responsibility to match your speed to the actual conditions.
- Eliminate distractions: Driving deserves your full attention. Stay focused on the driving task.
With these helpful tips, we can all remain safe on our roadways during the upcoming winter season.
