Did You Know? An N95 mask requires more than just wearing it

FROM THE FIELD: PREET AMIN

It’s common to see workers wearing N95 respirators on construction sites, but did you know that simply wearing an N95 does not meet regulatory requirements when respiratory protection is required?

Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health Regulation Part 6.15 require respiratory protective equipment to be selected, used, and maintained in accordance with CSA Z94.4.

One of the key requirements of CSA Z94.4 is fit testing. A fit test confirms that the respirator forms an effective seal on the worker’s face and provides the intended level of protection. A worker’s daily seal check is important, but it does not replace a documented fit test.

Did you know?

  • N95 respirators are considered tight-fitting respirators and require fit testing.
  • Workers must be fit tested before first use.
  • Fit testing must be repeated at least every two years, or sooner if there is a change that could affect the fit.
  • A seal check performed by a worker before use does not replace a fit test.

During audits and site visits, one of the most common gaps observed is the absence of current fit-testing records. Taking a few minutes to verify that workers have been fit tested and that records are available can help ensure compliance and, more importantly, that workers are receiving the protection they need.
