STAYING IN TOUCH: JACQUELYN ODURO
Construction is tough—physically, mentally, and emotionally. Long hours, heavy workload, time away from family, and job pressures can wear you down. But taking care of your mental health is just as important as taking care of your physical health.
Last week was Men’s Mental Health Week—and it’s a chance to stop and check in with ourselves and each other.
According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, construction has one of the highest suicide rates among all industries. Around 1 in 5 Canadians experience a mental health issue every year. And, men are less likely to ask for help, even when they need it most.
You’re not weak if you’re struggling – you’re human.
Signs a buddy might be struggling:
- Mood changes – angry, withdrawn or unusually quiet
- Loss of motivation or energy
- Talking about feeling hopeless or like a burden
- Not showing up or being late more often
Resources you can use
Here are some free and confidential supports:
- 988: Mental Health Crisis & Suicide Prevention Line (Canada-wide, 24/7)
- Wellness Together Canada: www.wellnesstogether.ca
- Local EAP Programs (if your workplace offers one)
- Talk to text to someone you trust – family, friends or coworkers
Let’s keep each other safe – not just from physical hazards, but from mental and emotion ones too.
It’s okay to not be okay – and it’s always okay to talk about it.
