STAYING IN TOUCH: JACQUELYN ODURO
The National Day of Mourning is observed annually on April 28 across Canada to honour workers who have been killed, injured, or made ill due to workplace incidents. It serves as a solemn reminder of the importance of health and safety in every workplace, recognizing the impact these tragedies have on families, coworkers, and communities.
The day also reinforces a shared commitment among employers, workers, and safety professionals to prevent future incidents. Through ceremonies, moments of silence, and public awareness efforts, Canadians reflect on the human cost of unsafe work and renew their dedication to creating safer, healthier workplaces for everyone.
On this National Day of Mourning, take the time to reflect on those affected by workplace fatalities, injuries, and illnesses.
If you would like to show your support, you can join the Leaders’ Walk beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the Union Centre and proceeding down Broadway to the Workers Memorial at Memorial Park (across from the Manitoba Legislature). A Day of Mourning ceremony will be held at the memorial beginning at Noon and concluding with a vigil for fallen workers.
