National Day of Mourning

STAYING IN TOUCH: JACQUELYN ODURO

Each April 28, in Canada, we remember workers we lost to workplace injuries and illnesses on this National Day of Mourning. Canada was the first country to commemorate this day, but it is now observed in over 80 countries around the world.

The National Day of Mourning is not only a day to remember and honour those lives lost and those injured due to a workplace incident, but also a day to collectively renew our commitment to improve health and safety in the workplace to prevent injuries, illnesses and deaths.

We have tragically lost 15 workers in our industry due to fatal injuries or illness between 2018 and 2022. Over the past 35 years MHCA® WorkSafely® has diligently advocated and worked for increased worker protection in the heavy construction industry.

We encourage all Manitobans to remember and commemorate those we’ve lost. To learn more, you can visit the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety’s “National Day of Mouning” webpage.
