Shovels are out, now that snow is falling. Each year, it is important to temper the snow-clearing enthusiasm with caution, to protect your health.
Shoveling is a strenuous activity for anyone. Some important tips to keep in mind:
- Dress to the conditions, with layers to insulate well.
- Stretch and warm up your muscle to avoid sprains and strains.
- Select the correct shovel that is light and sturdy.
- Shovels with a bend in the shaft may be less stressful for the lower back.
- Have a “D” shaped handle to not force awkward grip postures over time.
- Have the shovel shape and blade match the task.
- Shovel snow at a steady pace to not overexert yourself. Take breaks and drink water.
- When shoveling, remember to push the snow rather than lift. Don’t try lifting too much snow.
- Turn your feet to the direction you are throwing the snow. DO NOT twist at the waist or throw snow over your shoulder!
- Reassess your footing to ensure you are on a stable, non-slippery surface while shoveling to avoid slips, trips and falls.
Snow shoveling may seem a simple and mundane task, but it can be hazardous. For more information regarding snow shoveling and other winter activities contact your regional advisor.
