According to the Winnipeg Police Service, 10 pedestrians and two cyclists have been killed in collisions so far in 2024, while five pedestrians were killed in 2023 and 15 pedestrians were killed in 2022. We must share the road. Below are safety suggestions for all road users:
For pedestrians:
- Pedestrians should use sidewalks, crosswalks and follow traffic signals.
- When walking at night, bright or reflective clothing can help you be seen.
- Avoid using cell phones while crossing roads.
- It is helpful to make eye contact with drivers before crossing.
For cyclists:
- Helmets should be worn at all times while riding.
- Use bike lanes where available and follow traffic rules/signals.
- Use clear hand signals to indicate turns or stops.
- Front and rear bicycle lights help ensure you are seen.
For motorists:
- Drive cautiously at all times and for conditions
- Follow speed limits, and be mindful in school zones and other areas such as construction sites.
- Drivers must yield to pedestrians at crosswalks. Keep alert for the lights.
- Keep blind spots in mind and check mirrors regularly.
- Drivers should avoid using their phones and other distractions while driving.
- Maintain a distance of at least 3 feet/1 meter of space when passing pedestrians or cyclists.
