This January has been unusual weather wise, with temperatures hovering around or near the freezing mark. Rain, freezing rain, slush, and melting snow can create extremely slippery surfaces, increasing the risk of slips, trips, falls, and vehicle or equipment incidents.
Key risks can include:
- Difficulty seeing ice form under rain or slush
- Slippery scaffolds, ladders, decks, steps, and outdoor surfaces
- Reduced traction for equipment and vehicles
- Poor visibility and cold, wet exposure both in person and while driving
Safety controls to use can include:
- Wear proper footwear with slip-resistant soles and ice cleats when required
- Sand, salt, and regularly maintain walking and working surfaces regularly
- Clear slush and standing water quickly to prevent further freezing
- Use handrails and three points of contact on ladders, stairs, and while entering or exiting vehicles
- Slow down when walking, driving, or operating equipment
- Inspect work areas at the start of a shift and throughout the day
- Dress for wet conditions to prevent cold stress and loss of dexterity while gripping tools and equipment.
