Heavy equipment mechanics graduates looking for work

Some 70 Red River College students are on their way to becoming newly minted heavy-duty technicians, Level 1, and are looking for work, many within the heavy construction industry, says RRC course instructor Rick Wiebe.

The students have completed the 10-month, heavy-duty diesel mechanic course. Graduates must have attained a 3.0 GPA, with no failures, and already will have logged 900 “hours of work” towards the mandatory 1,800-hours threshold required for Level 1.

“What they need to finish their Level one would be another 900 hours of work, which an employer would provide. Once their hours have been satisfied, they are able to move to Level 2 for further training in our trade,” Wiebe said.

“Each year we take in 70-plus student and usually we have about 80-90% complete the course. In that mix of students, a majority of them would like to go into the heavy-construction or agriculture side.”

Students in the heavy-duty diesel mechanic course are always looking for work placement opportunities, as well. The two-week work placement is arranged through course instructors.

If you would like to learn more about prospective hires, please contact Rick Wiebe, Pre-employment/Apprenticeship Instructor at Red River College, at 204-697-5937 or at rmwiebe@RRC.ca.
