Labour minister to focus on wages, union membership and workplace safety

Premier Wab Kinew has directed Labour Minister Malaya Marcelino to focus on ensuring workers have fair wages, better access to union membership and assurance their workplaces are safe.

In the minister’s letter of mandate, Kinew directs Marcelino to work with Cabinet colleagues and through legislative, regulatory and department processes to:

  • Protect workers jobs and always stand up for the rights of working people
  • Make it easier for Manitobans to join a union and get a good job that pays the bills
  • Restore the Minister’s Advisory Council on Workplace Health and Safety
  • Work with the department of Advanced Education and Training to improve the recognition of international credentials starting in health care.

And to

  • Work with the Federal government to increase the number of immigrants who come to and also stay in Manitoba through the Manitoba Provincial Nominee program with a focus on family reunification
  • Improve workplace safety by hiring more workplace health and safety officers.
