Trade corridors, infrastructure investment key to economy: throne speech

The Manitoba government’s November 21 throne speech set out health, education and the cost of living as priorities for the legislative agenda, and noted that investing in trade and infrastructure will help the province reach its economic potential.

The speech, read by Lieut. Gov. Anita Neville, made clear that Manitoba’s social and affordability challenges will occupy much of the government’s attention this session and in years to come. The temporary removal of the 14-cent/litre provincial gas tax will start in the New Year, the speech reminded Manitobans.

The speech also noted that the government will keep its eye on the necessary investment in trade corridors and assets to ensure Manitoba does business continentally and globally.

“Through meaningful infrastructure investments, we can ensure that Manitoba is a real partner in interprovincial and global trade,” the speech noted.

“With northern Manitobans, our government will invest in trade corridors and ensure the Port of Churchill helps us fulfill our economic potential by making Manitoba a maritime province. We will make it easier for businesses and Manitobans to travel across our province with improved airports in the north. Together, we can build a strong economic future in our province, where businesses want to invest, and where families can build a good life with good wages.”

The speech further committed the government to working with municipalities in the provision of services and to “build the infrastructure you need to keep up with population growth.”

“We are glad to hear Premier Kinew, once again, recognize publicly the very critical role infrastructure investments play in fueling the economy and generating revenues to government that help pay for core services and social programs,” MHCA President & CEO Chris Lorenc said.

“This is encouraging not just for our industry, but for the future growth and prosperity of our province.”

Trade accounts for 53% of Manitoba’s economy.

The government signalled that there will be decisions necessary regarding expenditures.

“Many commitments the previous government made did not fit within a sustainable approach to the province’s finances. These decisions have left Manitoba in a financial challenge,” it stressed.

“This does not deter us from fulfilling our mandate to balance the budget at the end of this term in office, but it will require that we act responsibly and stabilize the province’s finances.
