Winnipeg Public Works releases tender ad schedule for streets

The tender ad schedule for Local and Regional Street Renewal Program shows a rough estimation of when projects will be tendered for 2024, and includes $16 million in planned carry-over projects from previous years.

The City of Winnipeg draft capital budget holds $138.3 million in local and regional street work this year. Public Works cautions against adding up the value of the projects stated in the 2024 tender ad schedule to compare against the budget for this year, due to many factors including the fact some amounts are from carry-over projects.

The department cautioned that there will a number of late tenders this year “which is not ideal.”

“In addition to construction contract value, the approximate project budgets shown include engineering, materials testing, overheads, property acquisition (where required), utilities costs including traffic signals, street lighting, and other utility relocations costs among other incidental costs.”

MHCA President & CEO Chris Lorenc said the association is continuing to talk to Public Works officials regarding the rollout of the tenders this year, to ensure the program proceeds as expeditiously as possible and that budget set is budget tendered.

MHCA has requested from Water & Waste its 2024 tender ad schedule, as well.

Public Works has also provided a summary of street projects carried over to 2024. Click here to see that summary.

Aside from the projects the department planned for carry-over, some projects did not begin construction last year by request of contractors and some were not completed by the season’s end. Of the 17 projects that were unable to wrap-up, 11 are between 80-90% complete.

The 2024 Local and Regional Streets budget is $17.5 million below the program’s 2023 budget.

The MHCA is in discussions with councillors and with the Mayor’s office regarding the current and forecasted budgets for street renewal.
